Reconnaissance missions over the Moon’s North and South poles have revealed pockets of ice water buried inside the permanently shadowed craters. In Lunar Venture you take control of a company seeking to profit from this discovery. Recovering the ice will need to make use of the Sun’s energy, as your transporters charge up in the sun. However the strength of the sunlight decreases closer to the poles. Ice extracted and delivered to a refinery can be split into hydrogen and oxygen, which can then be transported to a rocket, put into orbit and then sold to deep space missions. Players will gain points when other players take resources off their infrastructure or when players build and supply Moon bases. The winner is the player with the most points after one Lunar day. Lunar Venture is an economic, tile placement, pick up and deliver game. The game takes place on a shared space, the lunar board. The board is divided into hexagons, light hexagons are areas where sunlight can reach, and dark hexagons are craters where the sunlight cannot reach. Around the outside of the board is a tile with numbers on that represent the strength of the sunlight across the Moon. Each round this tile will rotate around by 60 degrees, and the game ends after 6 rounds when the tile has returned to its starting position. Each round of the game players take turns placing rockets, transporters and four different types of tiles. Extractors that produce ice at the start of a round; refineries that convert ice into hydrogen and oxygen; solar arrays that provide extra energy for transporters; and Moon bases that award points when supplied with ice, hydrogen and oxygen. The pieces cost different amounts of money, and the money spent is recorded on a track so turn order for the next round can be determined by how players spend their money. Placing pieces useful to other players puts you earlier in turn order, but placing pieces useful to only yourself puts you later in turn order. At the start of each round ice is placed on extractors, and because players can take ice from any extractors, theirs or other player’s, going earlier in turn order will help players secure that ice. But going earlier is not necessarily better. At the end of a players turn ice on refineries is converted to oxygen and hydrogen, so if a player intends to take those resources off another player’s refinery then they will try to place themselves after them in turn order. Points are awarded to any player who has their resources taken by another player, so the best strategy is to both manufacture resources for other players, and consume the resources of other players. So you should place yourself in turn order such that you can do so from those adjacent to you on the board. At the start of the round transporters charge up using the Sun’s energy, then on a player’s turn they can use the energy acquired to move resources. If you take hydrogen or oxygen to a rocket it can be launched into space and the resources placed on your satellite. At the start of the round players blind bid using their one time use sale price cards, and at the end of the round the resources on player’s satellites are sold from cheapest to most expensive until the demand is fulfilled. As an alternative strategy to making money players can instead build and supply Moon bases, as they provide points. There are no loans in the game but you can spend points instead of money, but at the end of the game money is converted to points 2 for 1, and the player with the most points will win.
